Choir Cecilia

Our Musical Director

Peter thumbPeter Webb OAM has been Musical Director of Choir Cecilia since 1997.

He has a strong commitment to community music-making, and encourages musicians of all ages to involve themselves in the joy of performing music together. Peter has been the conductor of the Unley Symphony Orchestra since 1983, and has been a guest conductor of numbers of other orchestras and choirs in the Adelaide area over many years. He was a member of the Council of the Young Adelaide Voices from 2004 to 2008, and Director of S.A. State Music Camp from 2008 to 2016, using his experience to nurture new generations of young musicians in orchestral and ensemble playing.

In his professional life, Peter was an oboe and cor anglais player, holding the position of Principal Cor Anglais in the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra from 1975 until his retirement in 1995. He also works as a composer; and the choir has performed several of his arrangements and  compositions over the years, including Songs for Cecilia, written specifically for the choir in 2002.

Peter also is a performer on the didjeridu, and has accompanied many choirs in Adelaide when that instrument has been required. He begins every Choir Cecilia concert with a short solo, as a way of honouring the Aboriginal people of Australia.

In 2007, Peter was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia, for service to the arts as a “musician, conductor, composer, and teacher”.
